About Miguel Metza
Miguel Metza Sanchez was born and raised in the native community of El Porvenir, in the Lower Ucayali region of the Peruvian Amazon. Today, he lives with his wife and two daughters in the native community of Vista Alegre de Basilea, in the Ucayali region.
His relationship with traditional Shipibo-Konibo medicine began at an early age. From the age of ten, Miguel accompanied his grandfather through the forest, learning to recognize plants and observing how they were understood and worked with within his tradition. At fifteen, he began his formal apprenticeship through plant dietas and work with ayahuasca, guided by his grandfather, whom he considers his first teacher.
After his grandfather passed away, Miguel continued learning with his brother and, over time, began undertaking his own dietas — first for weeks and later for increasingly extended periods, including retreats of more than a month in isolation in the forest. For Miguel, these dietas are not simply a complementary practice; they are one of the foundations of the traditional knowledge he received.
After many years of learning and preparation, he began accompanying others in his role as a curandero at around the age of 28. Since then, he has continued to deepen his relationship with plants, songs and the practices of his culture.
For Miguel, being a curandero means above all keeping his culture strong, respecting people and respecting the medicines. His path is deeply connected to dieta, discipline and direct relationship with plants.
As he says:
“Every plant and every body has its own song.”
Miguel speaks of plants as teachers that can transmit knowledge, songs and ways of understanding the relationship between body, spirit and the natural world. Within his own path, dietas have been one of the principal ways through which he has received and deepened this knowledge.
During his residency at AYNI Sanctuary, Miguel will share part of this journey through his Shipibo-Konibo tradition, his relationship with master plants and the practices that have shaped his learning over several decades.
His traditional clothing — the kusma, crown and its designs — is also part of this cultural identity. For Miguel, these designs are connected to the songs, plants and medicines that accompany his tradition.

Program
From the depths of the Amazon rainforest, the Shipibo–Konibo lineage carries one of the most refined and ancient spiritual technologies on Earth: the sacred medicine of Ayahuasca. For generations, this tradition has served as a bridge between the visible and invisible worlds, accompanying people through processes of healing, purification, vision, and spiritual awakening.
Rooted in the wisdom, cosmology, and ceremonial practices of the Shipibo–Konibo people, this retreat offers a sacred and held space for profound processes of healing, spiritual purification, and inner reconnection.
Through prayer, icaros — medicine songs — ritual, and conscious ceremony, participants are invited to enter into relationship with a living medicinal lineage that works not only with the mind, but also with the body, heart, soul, and energetic field.
This is a path of humility, surrender, courage, and love — guided by ancestral wisdom and held with deep reverence.
About Shipibo–Konibo Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is a sacred Amazonian medicine prepared from specific plants of the rainforest and transmitted through a ceremonial lineage.
Within the Shipibo–Konibo tradition, Ayahuasca is not only a medicine: it is a spiritual intelligence, a teacher, and a healer that works through vibration, frequency, and sacred song.
Shipibo–Konibo healers work with icaros — sacred medicine songs — to guide, direct, cleanse, and support the healing processes of participants’ energetic, emotional, and spiritual bodies.
Healing within this lineage is vibrational rather than conceptual. It is not only about stories or narratives, but about a profound reorganization of the inner field.

Ayahuasca Ceremonies
October 2 & 6
Two gatherings within the residency, accompanied by Miguel Metza and held within the context of his Shipibo–Konibo tradition.
Groups will be kept small in order to preserve an intimate and carefully held environment.
Master Plant Dietas
Within the Shipibo–Konibo tradition, the dieta — also known as sama — is a practice of retreat, listening, and intentional relationship with a plant.
It is not simply a dietary practice. It is a period of greater simplicity and introspection, creating space to deepen the relationship with the plant and with one’s own personal process.
Marusa
October 9–14
Miguel describes Marusa, a plant with small white flowers, as one he has traditionally worked with in processes of learning, care, and relationship with the body and spirit.
Over six days, the dieta offers a space for deeper silence, observation, and listening, accompanied within his tradition.
The experience will also include baños de florecimiento, using plants and flowers as part of the traditional support of the process.
Bobinsana
October 17–22
Bobinsana holds a special place within Miguel’s traditional knowledge. He speaks of this plant in relation to song, the river, and the learning that can emerge through a sustained relationship with the plant.
This dieta offers six days of introspection, listening, and guided accompaniment within a small group.
Baños de florecimiento will also be integrated as part of the traditional process.
Closing Retreat
October 25–27
Three days to close the residency with a dedicated space for reflection, integration, and connection with what has been experienced throughout the process.
